Chemical peels work by applying a specially formulated solution to the skin that causes controlled exfoliation. The peel solution is chosen based on your skin type and concerns, with options ranging from superficial to deep peels. During the treatment, the solution penetrates the skin’s surface, prompting the top layers to peel away over time. This process reveals newer, more youthful skin while stimulating collagen production for long-term skin health. After the peel, your skin may feel sensitive, and peeling will occur as the old skin sheds, making way for the fresh, smooth layer beneath.
The treatment is relatively quick, typically lasting about 30-45 minutes, depending on the depth of the peel. During a chemical peel, your skin may feel warm or hot briefly, followed by some stinging; when changes appear depends on the peel. Downtime depends on peel depth: light peels heal in 1 to 7 days, medium peels in 7 to 14 days and deep peels in 14 to 21 days.
