Dark eye circle, also known as periorbital hyperpigmentation, are a common cosmetic concern characterised by the appearance of dark patches under the eyes. Dark eye circles can make you look tired, aged, or unhealthy, even when you’re well-rested.
The darkening of the skin under the eyes, known as pigmented dark eye circles, occurs due to an overproduction of melanin. This type of dark circle is more common in individuals with darker skin tones and may worsen with sun exposure.
Dilated blood vessels under the delicate skin around the eyes lead to the development of vascular dark eye circles.
This type of dark circle may appear bluish or purplish and can be exacerbated by factors such as allergies, sinus congestion, or rubbing the eyes.
Loss of fat and collagen in the skin’s underlying structures creates shadows and hollows under the eyes, contributing to the development of structural dark eye circles.
This type of dark circle may appear more prominent with age and can be addressed with dermal fillers or other cosmetic procedures.
