A double chin, also known as submental fat, is a common cosmetic concern characterized by the accumulation of excess fat beneath the chin and jawline. It can affect individuals of all ages and body types, leading to an undesirable fullness or sagging appearance in the lower face.
The layer of fat is located just beneath the skin’s surface. When excess fat accumulates in this area, it can create a soft, jiggly appearance under the chin, resulting in a double chin.
Subplatysmal fat is located deeper beneath the muscles of the neck and jawline. This type of fat can contribute to a more pronounced and firm double chin, which may be resistant to diet and exercise.
A double chin may occur as a result of loose or slack skin in the neck and lower face. As the skin loses elasticity with age or weight loss, it may sag or droop, creating folds and wrinkles under the chin.
