Stretch Marks

What is a Stretch Mark?

Stretch marks, also known as striae, are common skin imperfections characterised by streaks or lines that appear on the skin’s surface. They often occur as a result of rapid stretching or changes in the skin’s structure, leading to the formation of scars that can be pink, red, purple, or silver in colour.

Causes of Stretch Mark

Types of Stretch Mark

Striae Rubrae

Striae rubrae, also known as early or red stretch marks, are newly formed stretch marks that appear as pink, red, or purple streaks on the skin. They have inflammation as their defining feature, and itching or discomfort may also be present.

Striae Albae

Striae albae, or mature stretch marks, are older stretch marks that have faded over time and appear as white or silver lines on the skin. They are often less noticeable than red stretch marks, but they may still cause self-consciousness or dissatisfaction with one’s appearance.

Striae Gravidarum

Striae gravidarum are atrophic linear scars that represent one of the most common connective tissue changes during pregnancy. SG can cause emotional and psychological distress for many women.
