CO2 Laser treatment, also known as carbon dioxide laser resurfacing, is an ablative skin rejuvenation procedure that uses carbon dioxide laser beams to precisely remove layers of damaged skin. This treatment targets various skin concerns, such as fine lines, acne scars, sun damage, uneven skin texture, and can also be used as a laser for pigmentation issues. By vaporizing the outer layer of skin, CO2 laser also heats the skin beneath to stimulate collagen, which can help the new skin become smoother and firmer.
CO2 Laser treatment operates by emitting concentrated beams of carbon dioxide laser energy in a fractionated pattern. This means the laser treats narrow columns of skin, leaving the surrounding skin untreated and intact so that less skin is injured. The laser energy vaporizes the top layers of damaged skin, while the heat generated by the laser stimulates the underlying skin to produce new collagen and elastin.
A doctor assesses you first, then the treatment area is numbed with a local anaesthetic. The laser is then carefully guided over the skin, delivering precise energy to targeted areas. The damaged skin cells are removed, and the body’s natural healing process is triggered. Over the following weeks, new skin forms and collagen production increases, which can help the skin become firmer, smoother and more even in tone.
CO2 Laser treatment can soften fine lines and make acne scars less noticeable as the skin heals and produces collagen. For deep wrinkles or loose skin, the doctor may suggest another option.
CO2 laser resurfacing can help with uneven skin tone, pigmentation issues and rough skin texture. Darker skin has a greater risk of developing dark patches after treatment.
